Today, I went for a bit of a ride on the Surly Krampus. Nothing special on the outset, just a bit of Bruce Ridge, a smidge of Centenary Trail, then over to the Arboretum and head home. Fairly standard dirt riding for the most part of 20kms. After the Arboretum, I crossed over to Lake Burley Griffin for a pootle along the lake and head home. Well that was the plan.
It sort of went a little awry, when I saw a bunch of roadies up ahead. I guess that I was about 15m behind them when we came to the smaller cork plantation along the edge of LBG. I decided to have a bit of fun and see if I could beat them by descending through the plantation. Apparently I could, just! So now I was just ahead of them and thought it was a bit silly to slacken off and annoy them, so I rode them off my back wheel. Now they were dropped, I slackened off a bit, just before the rise over Black Mountain Peninsula. As I was climbing it, two of the six caught me and proceeded to pass me. Right, game on! Quickly caught the back marker of the two and sat beside him. I asked if he had dropped the guy on the fat bike yet (that being me). He said "Apparently not", whereby I rode in pursuit of the one further up. As I passed him, I asked if he needed a tow. I am a bastard! I then continued on with him jumping on my wheel. One would think that would be enough, but the first guy stayed on my wheel. So on I trundled, wondering how close he would stick to me. Apparently not close enough when I dived off once again onto dirt. Spewin, would've loved to seen him follow me!
