I went for a ride today with a plan to head out along Dog Trap Rd to Yass, then loop back home via Yass River Rd. Local flooding required a detour along the way, but I generally stuck to the planned route.
My first turn-off was onto Rolfe Rd, as maps indicated it would connect to Kaveneys Rd. However, I quickly discovered that it didn’t. The owners of Bedulluck have clearly had plenty of visitors misdirected by Google Maps, as they’ve posted a sign saying the map is wrong. So, I backtracked to the Barton Highway and took Kaveneys Rd instead. From Kaveneys, I continued onto Dog Trap Rd until I reached Yass Valley Way, where I turned onto Yass River Rd. Along this road, I stopped to check out St. Mary’s Anglican Church (1911) and Mundoon Wesleyan Chapel (1862). Mundoon appears to be used less often than St. Mary’s, though the grounds seem to be maintained now and then. After Mundoon, I was supposed to turn down Greenwood Rd to cross the Yass River, but flooding had covered the causeway. I snapped a photo, then continued along Yass River Rd, eventually detouring onto Back Creek Rd, which led me to Gundaroo Rd and then onto Murrumbateman Rd. Turning onto Tallagandra Ln, I was back on my original route and crossed another flooded causeway before continuing onto Mulligans Flat Rd. From there, it was just a short ride home to Harrison. The day began overcast, but I still set off for a ride to Gunning. The dirt started once I turned onto Marked Tree Rd at Gundaroo, where the road runs along the escarpment overlooking the Federal Highway and Lake George. The views up there are fantastic, especially at the hang-gliding launch point. Just before the descent into Collector, I took a left onto Collector Rd, which stayed as dirt until a few kilometres before reaching Gunning. On the way, I stopped to snap some photos of an old, dilapidated house.
In Gunning, I fuelled up and grabbed a quick bite before heading out along the main road. I turned onto Gundaroo Rd and crossed over the Hume Highway, then shortly afterwards, I took Lade Vale Rd for a few kilometres before turning onto Berrebangalo Rd, where the dirt began again. My original plan was to cut across to Elms Rd via a connecting track, but I encountered a locked gate marking a Wildlife Sanctuary, so I had to adjust the route. I continued along Berrebangalo Rd until reaching Yass River Rd, where I took a right and followed it to Greenwood Rd, crossing the Yass River. Shortly after, I turned onto Boutchers Ln. Amusingly, at one end, it's named Boutchers Ln, but it changes to Boutchers Dr at the other end, somewhere around a property’s driveway. From there, I took Nanima Rd, then Murrumbateman Rd, and finally made my way back home via Sutton Rd and Mulligans Flat Rd. Ride Map Today, I went on a hike I’d organised as a team bonding exercise for work. We planned to wrap up with lunch and farewells at the pub afterward. Unfortunately, I thought I’d started my GPS but realised too late that I hadn’t, so I missed recording the first part of the walk.
The hike was 10 km and took us past several historic sites, offering a glimpse into the local history. Despite the warm weather, everyone enjoyed the experience and appreciated the chance to explore together. Hike Map This was my first proper ride after getting my learner's licence. I started out on Mulligans Flat Rd and turned onto Tallagandra Ln. The causeway there had some water running through it, which made for an exciting yet nerve-wracking first water crossing on a motorbike. After successfully navigating it, I continued along Tallagandra Ln until I reached the blacktop of Murrumbateman Rd.
Following Murrumbateman Rd brought me into Murrumbateman, where I spotted a water tank adorned with a mural of two Gang-gang cockatoos. I took a short break here to appreciate the artwork before heading out onto Dog Trap Rd for the return leg home via Hall to quench my dry palate. While it was an enjoyable ride, it left me wanting more dirt roads to explore. This experience made it clear that I’d be seeking out longer, more challenging off-road adventures in the future!
